Hitchin Street Angels
Volunteer to be a Hitchin Street Angel
You will be a committed Christian, ideally from a church that is part of Churches
together in Hitchin. You will feel comfortable in sharing your faith with others
and be able to demonstrate the love of Christ: to be ‘salt and light’ in the community
when many other Christians are tucked up in their beds! Hitchin Street Angels are
patrolling the town centre in teams of 3 between the hours of 10.00pm and 2.00am
most Saturday nights.
Each volunteer wears a reflective navy blue jacket bearing the distinctive Street Angels logo, thus they are easily identified as ‘safe’ people to approach if help is needed. Since their launch in April 2011 the project has been able to assist a large number of people, out to enjoy the clubs and bars around the town centre. Many have expressed their appreciation of the support and assistance offered and they have also developed good relationships with other agencies ‘on duty’ in the evenings.
Out on the street, what might the team get involved in?
Give directions, or accompany folk to the nearest safe taxi rank
Hand out bottled water to those suffering from dehydration
Supply flip flops where stilettos have caused blisters and girls are walking bare foot
Offer simple first aid, or call a paramedic
Wait with vulnerable individuals until their lift home arrives
Listen if folk want to off load or share their story
Respond to NiteNet radio calls, asking for Street Angels assistance, or conversely bring a concerning situation to the attention of CCTV or the Police
Give encouragement to other ‘officials’ on duty
Collect glass bottles and sweep up any broken glass
